Combating environmental problems
The Baltic Sea region's main environmental challenges.
Pollution reduction: Working together to reduce water pollution by implementing policies to reduce toxic discharges, untreated sewage and plastic waste in the Baltic Sea. This includes upgrading wastewater treatment systems, promoting sustainable agricultural practices to reduce excess nutrients, and banning or limiting single-use plastic products.
Ecosystem protection: Protect marine ecosystems in the Baltic Sea, such as sandbanks, seagrass beds and reefs. Establish marine reserves, protected areas and sustainable fishing zones to preserve biodiversity and promote responsible fishing.
Promotion of renewable energy: Encourage the development and use of renewable energy, such as offshore wind power, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.
Awareness and education: Conduct awareness and education campaigns to inform citizens about ecological problems in the Baltic Sea. This includes educational programs in schools, media campaigns and community awareness initiatives to encourage environmentally friendly behavior.
Regional cooperation: Putting one's own house in order is not enough because the solution is global. The coastal states must feel part of a common "Baltic Sea" identity and work closely together to implement effective and coordinated measures against the ecological problems of the Baltic Sea. This is done through regional initiatives, international agreements and mechanisms for sharing knowledge and good practices.
